Postpartum Hair, Two Years On: What’s Actually Helped Me
Breakage, thinness, flyaways that won’t behave—postpartum hair can feel like a prank no one warned you about. (One of the “perks”… kidding. Mostly.)
I’m nearly two years postpartum, and my hair shedding actually began around nine months after giving birth. At first, I blamed the blow-dryer. Nope. I tried vitamins and “hair foods.” Some made a slight difference; others didn’t help. The most significant change has come from a simple routine I’ve been following for the last five months. That routine has made a noticeable difference.
1) Filtered water (quietly powerful). We installed a whole-home system (Rhino Max Flow). It’s an investment; a filtered shower head (e.g., Rorra Filtered Shower head) is a good workaround. Southern California water was hard on my hair and skin, so filtering helped both. Takeaway: less mineral buildup equals happier hair and scalp.
2) Hydration: boring but effective. I keep spring water nearby all day. When I hydrate, my scalp feels better, and my hair behaves.
3) Gentle cleanse and condition (Glimmr Superfood Duo). I wash with the Superfood Shampoo and Superfood Conditioner. They cleanse without that stripped, squeaky feeling and don’t leave a heavy film. My hair feels clean, soft, and easier to detangle. I wash my hair every other day.
4) Daytime moisture + protection (Crown Affair Leave-In Conditioner). On damp (or even dry) hair, I work a pea-to-dime-size amount of Crown Affair The Leave-In Conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, then comb through. It’s weightless, adds hydration, smooths frizz, and gives heat protection if I do a quick blow-dry. Hair feels soft without being coated.
5) Weekly repair (Glimmr Hair Mask). I’ve used the Glimmr Hair Mask once a week for five months. After each use, my hair is softer and more manageable with fewer snags and less visible breakage at the crown. It also smells divine!!
What’s inside: nutrient-rich superfood extracts + vegan keratin for strength; castor oil, aloe, and hyaluronic acid to comfort the scalp; shea, argan, and coconut for moisture without weight; and guava leaf, fig, and camellia for shine.
Who it helps: dry, damaged, color-treated, or aging hair that needs strength, slip, and shine.
How I use the mask (10–15 minutes):
Shampoo, rinse.
Work the mask through damp hair and into the scalp; massage.
Leave on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
If your hair is very brittle, try twice-weekly for a month, then taper.
6) Night protection + repair (silk + serum)
I sleep on a silk pillowcase (picture from HINU) and put my hair in a loose top bun with an oversized silk scrunchie—less friction means fewer tangles and less breakage by morning.
2–3 nights a week, I add Crown Affair The Overnight Repair Serum (1–2 pumps through mid-lengths to ends before the bun). It’s a light, leave-in oil/serum that’s marketed as strengthening, softening, and smoothing. I wake up with more shine and fewer rough ends.
7) From the inside (optional)!
I take Cowboy Colostrum. Not a miracle, but I do feel my strands are stronger. Your mileage may vary, so check with your doctor if you’re pregnant or nursing.
8) New addition: Nutrafol (Day 1)
I just started Nutrafol today and added it to the mix. They say visible results can take around 3 months, so I’ll report back with an honest update—what I notice (or don’t)—at the 12-week mark.
Supplements aren’t one-size-fits-all. If you’re pregnant/nursing or on medication, talk with your clinician first.
Results I’m seeing now
Softer, more manageable hair after masking.
Less breakage at the ends and fewer crown flyaways.
Faster styling; looks less like “postpartum frizz” and more polished.
Calmer scalp (filtering the water helped here, too).
Fewer overnight tangles and more shine with silk and the overnight serum.
This is my experience. Your hair, hormones, and water situation are unique. I think this is a gentle template to try, not a prescription.
What I actually do (weekly checklist)
Filtered shower
Superfood Shampoo → Superfood Conditioner when I wash
Crown Affair Leave-In Conditioner on damp hair (frizz control + heat protection)
Glimmr Hair Mask 1×/week (2× during fragile phases)
Night: silk pillowcase + supersized silk scrunchie
2–3 nights/week: Crown Affair Overnight Repair Serum (mid-lengths → ends)
Drink water; keep heat styling minimal
Start Nutrafol (Day 1) → check in at 12 weeks
If you try any of this, let me know what you notice at 3 weeks and 8 weeks. And if you’ve found a great shower filter, drop the brand in the comments. Sharing helps everyone.
